Accidental Death & Dismemberment Insurance

Despite concerted efforts by safety officials everywhere, Canada's accidental death toll continues to soar. Insurance cannot prevent accidents, but it can protect families against the severe financial hardships that accompany sudden accidental death or dismemberment.

 

Members insured for - or who are applying for - Term Life and/or Critical Illness Insurance, who are under age 60 and reside in Canada, are also eligible to apply for Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance. Coverage is available on a Member Only or Member and Family Plan basis. The Member and Family Plan covers you, your spouse, and all your dependent children.

Member, as defined under the plan, includes employees, graduates, faculty members and full-time students of the University of Saskatchewan.

Employee means a person who is employed in an administrative capacity by the Alumni Association.

Spouse means the legal or common-law spouse of an eligible Member. Legal spouse means a person who is legally married and cohabiting with the Member and with whom there is no formal or informal agreement of separation. Common-law spouse means a person who has been cohabiting in a marriage-like relationshiop with the Member for at least 12 consecutive months.

Dependent Children means any natural child, step-child or legally adopted child of an eligible Member who is :

  • over 14 days of age and under 21 years of age, unmarried and receives full parental support and maintenance, or
  • 21 years of age or over but under 25 years of age, unmarried and receives full parental support and maintenance for reason of full-time attendance at a recognized school, college or university.

Mentally or physically disabled children may remain covered past 21 years of age, provided they are incapable of self-sustaining employment and receive full parental support and maintenance from the Member.

Benefit Amounts

You can apply for coverage in units of $25,000 up to a maximum of $800,000.

Coverage is available on a Member Only or Member and Family Plan basis. If you choose Member and Family Plan, your Spouse and Dependent Children are insured for a percentage of your benefit as follows:

The value of each unit of insurance reduces by a percentage on the March 1st coincident with or following your 60th birthday as shown on the schedule below. This reduction is based on the amount of insurance inforce at age 59.

Payment of Benefit
If Injury results in Loss of or permanent and total Loss of Use of a Specified Loss within 365 days of the date of an accident, IAP will pay the benefit amount indicated in the Schedule of Losses. Only the largest amount shown on the Schedule of Losses is payable for all losses resulting from any one accident.

Schedule of Losses
If Injury results in any of the following Losses within 365 days of the date of the accident causing such Injury, IAP will pay an amount as specified below for the Loss or permanent and total Loss of Use of:

Additional Benefits

Waiver of Premium (for insured Members only)
If you are under age 65 and become totally disabled due to an accident or sickness, all premiums due after 6 months of continuous disability will be waived. Your coverage continues at no charge to you throughout the duration of your disability, up to age 85.

Daycare Benefits
If you die due to an accident and your children require daycare, IAP will reimburse daycare expenses up to 5% of your principal sum to a maximum of $5,000 for up to 4 consecutive years for each child. This benefit is only available under the Member and Family Plan.

Education Benefit
If you die due to an accident and your children pursue full-time post-secondary education, IAP will reimburse post-secondary education expenses up to 5% of your principal sum to a maximum of $5,000 for up to 4 consecutive years for each child. Your children must begin a full-time post-secondary program within a year of your death. This benefit is only available under the Member and Family Plan.

Home and Vehicle Alteration Benefit
If you or your insured dependants are injured in an accident and permanently require a wheelchair, IAP will reimburse the costs of home and/or vehicle modifications for wheelchair accessibility, up to a maximum of $10,000.

Rehabilitation Benefit
If you are injured in an accident and are required to undergo special training to engage in a new occupation, IAP will reimburse for retraining expenses, up to a maximum of $10,000.

Repatriation Benefit
If you or your insured dependants die due to an accident outside of your city of residence, IAP will pay the actual expense incurred for preparing the deceased for burial or cremation and for the shipment of the body back to the city of residence, up to a maximum of $10,000.

Spousal Retraining
If you die due to an accident and your Spouse requires education to pursue a gainful occupation or to upgrade skills to obtain better employment opportunities, IAP will reimburse the education expenses, up to a maximum of $10,000.

General Information

Fully Portable Coverage
If you are an alumni member, coverage goes with you regardless of a change in your profession, job status, place of employment or residence – 24 hours a day, anywhere in the world – as long as you continue to pay your premiums.

Money Back Guarantee
Once your application is received and approved, you will be sent a Certificate of Insurance. You will have 60 days to review it to ensure that it meets your needs. Should you choose not to accept the insurance you can cancel your coverage and return the Certificate within 60 days of the effective date. You will receive a full refund of any premiums already paid.

Beneficiary
You may name any beneficiary you choose for the Member's Accidental Death benefit. The Member is automatically the beneficiary for the Spouse and Dependent Children's benefits.

Termination of Coverage
Your coverage terminates on the earliest of the following dates:

  • the end of the month in which your written request to cancel your insurance is received by IAP;
  • the end of the month in which you are no longer eligible;
  • the end of the month in which you are no longer insured for either group Term Life Insurance or Critical Illness Insurance;
  • the due date of any unpaid premiums;
  • the date the Group Master Policy between your Alumni Association and IAP terminates;
  • the end of the policy year following the date you reach age 85.

Limitations & Exclusions
No benefit will be paid for loss resulting directly or indirectly from, or in any manner or degree associated with, any of the following conditions:

a. suicide or any attempt thereat while sane or insane;
b. intentionally self-inflicted injury while sane or insane;
c. declared or undeclared war or any act thereof;
d. full time active service in the armed forces of any country; and
e. injury sustained while a pilot or member of a crew of any aircraft.
